Mekong Villas (Loei) Mekong Villas set in expansive private grounds amongst trees and a bamboo forest on the bank of the Mekong river in unspoilt Loei province, provide a natural tranquil retreat ideal for lovers of nature and for those wanting to escape the pressures of modern city living in old Siam style.
Made up of three individual properties the villas all take in beautiful views across the Mekong waters to the forested hills of Laos. The central and largest villa is a magnificent two-storey house combining traditional Thai and western design with three air-conditioned bedrooms, one with a shower room en-suite. A large living room and kitchen are located on the ground floor.
To the left is a traditional Lanna style two double bedroom villa on stilts, with teak panelled rooms and a large central terrace area from where views of the lush gardens and blue tiled swimming pool can be enjoyed.
The third villa with one bedroom is romantically located to the right and farthest corner of the grounds, accessed by its own 25 m. suspension bridge. Panoramic views over the Mekong can be enjoyed from the veranda and use of a small beach on the riverbank is possible in the dry season.
A simple maid and cooking service is provided with airport transfers available from Loei or Udon. Pre arranged provisions are possible.
Location
Mekong Villas can be accessed from Loei airport via Chiang Khan on the banks of the Mekong, following the scenic no. 211 road in an easterly direction for 33 kl.; there are some fantastic views of the river and countryside along the way. From Udon airport the transfer is approximately a 1½ hr drive and 8 kl. after Pak Chom village.
Getting there
Loei is 520 km north east from Bangkok and depending on available time and budget can be accessed by:-
- Bus: Bangkok-Loei = 10 Hours Drive
- Regular daily air-conditioned bus service.
- Driving: Bangkok-Loei = 9 Hours Drive. A very pleasant and scenic journey most of the way with mainly straight roads passing through flat farming country. Plenty of options for eating and refreshments.
- Air: Bangkok-Loei = 1 Hr 20 min. There are flights three times per week.
- Fly-Drive: Bangkok -Udon Thani = 1 Hour Flight. There are daily flights. Udon Thani-Loei = 2 Hrs 30 min. drive.
Local Area Leisure Activities
Loei is the most traditional and un-commercialised of all the provinces in Thailand and is home to beautiful natural tropical landscapes with silhouette mountain backdrops and National Parks. The local community is made up of mainly farmers who are famous for their welcoming friendliest and ability to produce some of the finest cuisine in Thailand. The province covers an area of 11,424 sq.km with the provincial capital 520 kilometres northeast of Bangkok. Loei is known to have the coldest winters in Thailand.
The major attractions in the province focus around exploring the national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and the Mekong River.

Popular day trips:-
- Phu Ruea National Park rises almost 1,400 metres above sea level and offers scenic views of Laos, verdant flora, waterfalls and more than 30 species of resident bird species.
- Phu Luang Wild-life Sanctuary is the highest peak in the province occupies a high plateau rising to 1,500 metres above sea level.
- Phu Kradung National Park of some 60-square kilometre occupies a plateau 1,300 metres above sea level and contains some of Thailand's loveliest flora, more than 130 species of birds, besides deer, squirrels, elephants, wild boar and monkeys, and several scenic viewpoints. The main trail to the peak is a 6 km. walk that takes about three hours. The park is closed from June through August each year.
- Phu Pha Man National Park near Pha Nok Khao has several caves with prehistoric paintings and three waterfalls.
- Kaeng Khut Khu Rapids in the Mekong River in Chiang Khan district are pronounced when the river is at low level.
- Mekong River Trip - Chiang Khan to Nong Khai There is an experienced local Thai river guide based in Chiang Khan who in the safe season will take small groups by boat down to Nong Khai which makes for a long but exciting day. - Chateau de Loei the pioneer of Thailand's wine-making industry has its vineyard and winery in the Phu Rua district and is a popular tour destination for enthusiasts with an interest in the art and science of winemaking. Chateau de Loei tends its vines to produce fruit all year round. It grows Syrah and Chenin Blanc grapes for making both white and red wines, while other varieties of vines produce table grapes for eating. Tours of the site are free, with tickets obtained from the Chateau de Loei shop located at the vineyard. The tour provides visitors with a thorough knowledge of grape cultivation.
