Eastern & Oriental Express Bangkok to Chiang Mai to Bangkok (for departures until April 2007)
Wednesday: Departs 10:30 Bangkok (Hualampong). Depart Bangkok in the morning aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express and settle into your beautifully appointed compartment. Lunch is served in the restaurant as the train journeys northwards through the Thai countryside. Arrives Ayutthaya 14:00. Guided tour and river cruise. Disembark at Ayutthaya where the magnificent ruins of temples, palaces and crumbling fortresses provide eloquent testimony of the former capital's splendour. A guided tour is followed by a relaxing cruise on board a classical rice barge, passing the famous Wat Chai Wattanaram and the Queen of Thailand's, Ayutthaya Palace. Sit back and watch the riverside life glide by and enjoy afternoon tea. During the evening, enjoy dinner on board as the train continues its journey. Retire to your compartment which has been transformed into a comfortable bedroom. Departs Ayutthaya 16:30
Thursday: Arrives 08:20 Chiang Mai. Guided tour. Breakfast is served to you by your steward in the comfort of your private compartment before arrival into Chiang Mai, Thailand's second largest city. Chiang Mai has a rich and colourful history evident in its architecture and is renowned for the greatest concentration of handicraft industries in the country. Enjoy a sightseeing tour of the famous sites before returning to the Eastern & Oriental Express for lunch. Later that afternoon, arrive in Lampang, one of Thailand's most attractive provincial capitals, having retained a number of its old wooden buildings. Here you may disembark and stretch your legs. Dinner and overnight onboard the train. Departs 12:30 Chiang Mai.
Friday: Arrives 08:45 Kanchanaburi. Guided tour of River Kwai. Enjoy breakfast as the train makes its approach to Kanchanaburi where you disembark for a photo opportunity of the train crossing the famous Bridge over the River Kwai. You then board a traditional large floating barge for a cruise along the River Kwai. During the sailing you will be able to admire the many splendid Thai teakwood houses amidst peaceful lush scenery. A brief visit is made to the Chung Kai Cemetery which honours World War II soldiers. After rejoining the the train, lunch is served before arrival in Bangkok during the afternoon. Departs 12:25 Kanchanaburi. Arrives Bangkok (Hualampong) 14:45
