Beach and the area
Aardvark Villa is only a few minutes stroll up the shady lane from tranquil Phu Noi Beach and local restaurants, surrounded by the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park; yet only 38 km to the Hua Hin with its wide range of restaurants, shops and night life.
Recommended local excursions in the area include a boat ride in the mangroves or canal, hike up to a viewpoint or cave, wild elephant viewing in the Kuiburi National Park and forest walks in Pranburi.
In addition to the natural beauty of the parks, the area also offers among the best seafood in Thailand!
Further a field a day snorkelling trip to beautiful Koh Talu island is a must and takes about a 2 hour drive further south. The fish are breathtakingly beautiful and very numerous in number and type.
Getting there
The most popular way of travelling from Bangkok to Pranburi is by driving the 220 kilometres distance which takes around 3 hrs. Alternatively there is a train service south which stops at Pranburi station. Also subject to flight
schedules it is possible to fly from Bangkok to Hua Hin Airport and then transfer by private minibus/limousine.
Kaeng Krachan National Park
The country's largest national park, and regarded as one of Thailand's most important remaining wildlife habitats, Kaeng Krachan national park is truly a bird watching must. Kaeng Krachan boasts some of the best birding and wildlife viewing opportunities in the country. With over 400 bird species, the park is home to five species of hornbill: the great, pied, brown, wreathed and plain-poached. At the higher elevations of the park other delights include the long-tailed broadbill and the ratchet-tailed treepie (can only be found in Kaeng Krachan).
Moist evergreen forests dominates the park where large wildlife gathers, such as bisons, barking deer, elephants, tigers, monkeys, langurs, gibbons, and bears.
Khao Sam Roi National Park
18 KM's south of Pranburi Sam Roi Yot National Park features over 300 hilltop 'peaks', some only really the result of rock rifts but still included in the figure. The park covers an area of 98 square kilometers and is home to an
array of wildlife including over 300 species of resident and migratory birds and the fast disappearing Irrawaddy dolphin. Seldom seen bird species such as the Painted Stork, Purple Heron, Northern Pintail and the Greater Spotted Eagle are commonly sighted at the park, particularly in the wetlands areas. Other species such as the Chestnut-headed Bee-eater, Hoopoe and the White-bellied Sea-Eagle are commonly seen around the park headquarters.
Aside from the '300' craggy limestone peaks, the park features mangrove swamps, beaches and estuaries and has numerous picturesque trails offering great trekking and even some quite good climbing, including a scenic hike up to the 600 meter Khao Krachom Peak. The park also has some notable limestone caves worth a visit.
